The Mirror of Reflection: Is It About Me or Them?

In the journey of self-awareness, I’ve come to see life not as a series of random events, but as a dance of reflections. Everything—every emotion, every person, every situation—acts like a mirror. But what happens when I’m not sure if what I’m seeing is a reflection of me… or them?

This question has circled my heart often:“If everything is a reflection, how can I tell when it’s more about the other person than about me?”
The answer, I’ve found, lives in presence. In slowing down and becoming still enough to listen to the energy underneath the moment.
Reflection or Projection?
Here’s a small compass I follow:
If a situation stirs something inside me—emotionally, energetically, or even physically—then it’s pointing to something within. A reflection. An invitation to heal, grow, or realign.
But if I feel calm, steady, and present, even in the midst of someone else’s storm, then I’m likely just holding a mirror for them. I’m witnessing, not reacting.
The Roles We Play
In this human play, we take turns. Sometimes we’re the student. Sometimes we’re the teacher and sometimes, we’re simply the mirror—a silent witness reflecting someone else’s story and that’s the beauty of it. No role is better than the other. All are sacred.
What “Give it Back” Has Taught Me
In the Give it Back vision, reflection is a gift. Not a burden. When I reflect something to someone else, I’m giving them the opportunity to see themselves more clearly. When life reflects something back to me, I receive a chance to step further into my true form.
And sometimes… we don’t have to figure it out in the moment. The knowing arrives like waves. In time. In stillness. That too, is reflection.
So the next time you ask yourself,
“Is this about me, or them?”
Pause. Breathe. Feel.
The mirror always speaks—but only in the language of the heart.
